The Johns Hopkins Center for Suicide Prevention is delighted to welcome Dan Reidenberg, Psy.D., as a member of our Core Faculty.
Dan is an internationally recognized leader in suicide prevention and mental health. His work spans public policy, responsible media practices and technology safety, and he brings deep experience working with the technology and social media sectors. That experience brings new opportunities to the Center's faculty and to the field.
Safer online spaces for young people
How can families, policymakers and the public tell whether an online platform takes young people's safety seriously? That question is at the heart of Safe Online Standards (S.O.S.), which Dan founded and directs.
S.O.S. launched on February 10, 2026, and describes itself as the "world's first expert driven standards and ratings system designed to protect teen mental health online." The idea is familiar to many parents: just as ratings help families make informed decisions about media content, S.O.S. aims to give parents, policymakers and industry leaders objective information about the safety and well-being practices of major digital platforms.
The first reviews focus on Meta, TikTok and Snap. Those ratings had not yet been released at the time of writing. More information is available at safeonlinestandards.org.
Responsible reporting on suicide
How the news media covers suicide matters for prevention. Dan wrote the U.S. recommendations for media reporting on suicide, guidance that helps journalists cover suicide safely and responsibly.
Those recommendations shape how the Center writes about suicide, including the stories on this website.
Sharing hope around the world
In April 2026, Dan delivered a keynote address, "Finding Rays of Hope in Suicide Prevention," at the Australian National Suicide Prevention Conference in Sydney. His talk reflected on both the challenges facing the field and the opportunities ahead.
Looking ahead
Dan's work connects research to the places where people, especially young people, spend their time: online, in the news and in their communities. As a Core Faculty member, he brings that perspective to the Center's work.
Please join us in welcoming Dan to the Center.
