Policy & Practice

Translating evidence into action, with the people closest to the work.

The Center collaborates with state behavioral health authorities, health officers, community organizations, national coalitions, and people with lived experience of suicide attempts or loss to help move research into practice.

Research matters most when it reaches the people who can use it. Through our policy and practice work, the Center collaborates with state agencies, school systems, community organizations, and national coalitions on technical assistance, learning collaboratives, and Research-to-Practice briefs. Our work is nonpartisan, evidence-grounded, and shaped by the people doing the work on the ground.

Working with the Center

The Center collaborates on projects where research can make a measurable difference. Each collaboration is scoped together, including its goals, timeline, and how the work is supported.

Technical Assistance

Evidence-based guidance for state agencies, school systems, and community organizations planning or implementing prevention programs.

Learning Collaboratives

Quarterly convenings, by invitation only, where state teams and academics work through shared challenges.

Research-to-Practice Briefs

Short, nontechnical translations of new findings with limited jargon — what they mean for policymakers, clinicians, and communities.

To explore working together, tell us about your organization and what you hope to accomplish. We'll follow up to talk through fit and next steps.

Briefing

When a Barrier Is a Public Health Intervention

Research co-authored by Center faculty finds that when a protective barrier is installed, deaths at that site fall and do not simply shift to nearby sites, evidence that is now informing public decisions about barriers.

Briefing

When the Only One Listening Is a Chatbot

On NPR, Center Director Dr. Holly Wilcox called a new ChatGPT "trusted contact" feature a small step in the right direction, and said she would rather see AI companies connect users directly with crisis counselors from 988.

State Legislation Database

Coming soon: a searchable collection of about 1.3 million bills and resolutions that mention suicide and suicide prevention, from 49 states and Washington, DC.

Search by keyword and state, then narrow the results by status, bill type, or year; a chart shows how many bills were enacted each year. Each bill includes an AI-generated summary, the full bill text with changes to existing law marked, and a link to the official source. Search results can be exported to a CSV spreadsheet.

A demo of the State Legislation Database, coming soon. The video has on-screen captions and no audio.

Collaboration begins with a conversation.

State and local agencies, community organizations, schools, health systems, and national coalitions — we'd like to hear from you.
